What is an AEC1?

The Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC1) is an essential entry-level training course designed covering the basics of marine engine maintenance and operations. Specifically developed for small vessels, the course introduces learners to diesel engines, from their operation to maintenance. Whether you’re an aspiring superyacht engineer, a beginner deckhand, or a boat owner eager to understand the fundamentals of engine care, the AEC1 course is a perfect starting point to get hands-on experience and practical knowledge of how to keep your vessel’s engine running smoothly. 

Who is the AEC1 for?

The AEC1 is the first step for the beginner engineers on small vessels or yachts. The course meets the requirements of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency of the UK and results in the certification necessary to undertake the career path all the way up to the Chief Engineer position. 

For deckhands play a crucial role in the day-to-day operation of vessels, and having an understanding of basic engine mechanics is invaluable. This course was initially designed to meet the manning requirements of certain vessels, allowing crew members to fulfill their primary roles while also assisting the engineer with their duties, thereby ensuring compliance with Safe Manning Requirements. 

On top, grasping the basics of marine engine operations and learning how to detect potential engine issues may save time and money for small vessel owners who have no engineers onboard. 

What are the course outcomes?

Upon completing the course, students will be equipped with knowledge to carry out routine maintenance tasks including changing filters, treating fuel and oil, improving engine room safety, and using basic fault-finding methods. Additionally,  AEC1 course certificate holders will be able to support the chief engineer in such routine operations involving inspections, fire-fighting systems, pumps, and generators.
