True Story: survived with a scratch thanks to the training

During STCW Basic Safety training week, our instructor Ged always shares stories to draw students’ attention to safety aspects and make learning relevant. Today, we want to share the story of our former student Katja who saved her own life relying on the knowledge from Personal Survival Techniques course.

Katja joined our STCW Basic Safety training week in March this year. Who would believe it, but slightly more than a month later she got back to Seascope France by email to stress how important the training is:

"Finished the course in March and had all the practical experience still fresh in my head, which helped me to stay calm, but I really was not ready to be in charge of saving the boat, made all the mistakes there could be done, even setting the coast on fire with the flare, pretty much a disaster... But thanks to the training I knew how it goes, got out of the water with a life jacket on and luckily with only a small scratch.

Again, really appreciate the effort the team is making to bring the experiences to the training ...."

As of the moment, the STCW regulation requires seafarers update their proficiency in fire fighting and personal survival techniques every 5 years, and the course includes two practical modules – Fire & PST.

Training is knowledge, and knowledge is crucial to avoiding panic and handling emergency situations properly. Previously, we told a story of our student Fabian who helped strangers on the road to prevent a massive fire.

Next week, on the 4th of May, we will run Elementary First Aid course open to the general public. The course is offered with a 50 euros discount, and we invite everyone to join and gain essential life-saving skills!
