New yachtie’s view: 5-day Basic Safety Training Course with Seascope France
The article below sets out Alyson’s experience who decided to kick start her career in superyacht industry and took a 5-day STCW Basic Safety Training course with Seascope France in Antibes.
With no experience in yachting, I stepped in the classroom slightly nervous. On arrival I met Ged, the trainer (the BEST trainer I ever met!) and other students. Everybody seemed friendly, and all were keen to learn how to survive on sea.
First things first. A cup of tea on arrival, then we took seats ready to hear what Ged had to tell us.
I won't relay here all the content and let you discover it once you decide to get into yachting. I'll just mention here some things that I appreciated about my experience.
First, it's the classroom location. It's super convenient with 5-minute walk from the train station, 3-min walk from the bus station, and 10-minute walk to the port and old town of Antibes. There is a convenience store, a bakery, a couple of restraunts and a snack bar nearby if you want to grab a lunch. Or else, there are a microwave and a fridge in the classroom.
Second, it's the trainer. I have already mentioned that he is great. No, he is actually awesome! Ged is a very knowledgable and passionate teacher. He turns learning into and makes everyone feel at ease in the classroom. With years of experience in the British Royal Navy, Ged has lots of stories to tell. And we all enjoyed them!
So, what is the Basic Safety Training Course about? I'd say, the name says it all! It's about safety and such things as first aid, survival techniques, security and responsibility. Also, it's about how to fight fires on boats and not only. The course has 5 modules, and 3 of them are covered in classroom. They are an absolute must if you want to get STCW certification.
But the other two modules are pure fun and action! I'll cover them in my next blog post. Stay tuned!
