RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is a great and easy start in maritime navigation. Even if you never stepped on a boat, this course is for you. It teaches the basic skills of powerboat handling and safety on the water. The course is equally recommended for pleasure boaters who want to navigate a small boat in familiar waters during day time and yacht crew who will drive superyacht tenders and build their maritime career. The RYA Powerboat Handling license delivered upon successful completion of the course is an advantage for both deckhands and stewards/stewardesses wishing to work in the superyacht industry. 

All our courses are conducted in English.

What you need to know

  • Classroom Address: 405 Chemin du Gaz, 06220 Golfe-Juan
  • Pre-study:  Read "RYA Start Powerboating" handbook (you will be provided with an e-book or paper copy)
  • Duration: 2 days
  • Start/finish time: 9 am - approx 5 pm.
  • Price: 460 euros

There are no pre-requisites for the RYA Powerboat Handling course, but we recommend the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship online course if you'd like to have more in-depth knowledge in navigation or plan to step up in boating, e.g. move up to the Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper, or Yachtmaster level. 

About the course

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a two-day comprehensive course that we run in the picturesque area of Golfe-Juan, next to Antibes, in the South of France. The course has both theoretical and practical aspects to it and covers various aspects of power boating, boat handling, safety and pilotage.

The course is highly practical, and you get to practice various manoeuvres on one of the two training vessels - either 6.5m Capelli tender or 6.9m Bombard rib. Both vessels are equiped in accordance with the RYA requirements, and if you feel like practicing a bit more after the course, you have a possibility to rent out one of the boats.

Getting ready for the course

In winter, make sure to keep your feet warm with deck shoes. In summer, you are welcome to be on the boat barefoot. The RYA Start Powerboating handbook should be read before joining the class. We advise you to look up online useful knots. All the knots you need to learn are mentioned in the handbook.

Private training

Seascope France offers flexibility with dates for those wishing to take the course privately (for max 3 people). To book a private course, please contact us or send an email to training@seascopefrance.com, and we will select the dates that work best for you and our instructor.

Therefore, Seascope France offers this course as a part of different Get Started on Yachts packs which include mandatory STCW Basic Safety Training, Jet Ski/PWC, and Yacht Steward/ess training: 

One-Day Assessment 

If you already hold a boat handling license (i.e. French permis mer côtier or any license from your country), you can qualify for one-day assessment which consists of a test and practical boat handling skills assessment which can be complete only if you score above 60% on the test. 

Successful completion of both the test and boat handling parts will result in obtaining the RYA Powerboat Handling license. 

The cost of the one-day assessment is 360 euros. If you believe you are eligible for one-day assessment rather than taking the full course, get in touch with us (or email training@seascopefrance.com), and we will process your enquiry. 

Boat Rental

You are now a happy owner of the RYA Powerboat Handling license, and you are ready to get on a boat and venture at sea! Seascope France offers you a possibility to rent out one of our training vessels (with or without a captain):

  • RIB Tempest Capelli (6.5 m long; 2.6 m wide; max capacity 10 pax)
  • RIB Sunrider 700 (6.9 m long)

The advantage of renting a boat with us is that during the 2 days of your training you familiarize yourself with the vessel, and you will probably feel more comfortable and confident to drive a boat you spent time on.

Did everything I expected, more enjoyably than I expected.

The course was rigourous and still managed to be lots of fun (mainly due to Sammi's sense of humour). Plenty of practical boat driving experience. Repetition is the key to learning and we got to practice our manoeuevers enough that the lessons sank in and had a good laugh while doing it. The boat was modern, safe and really fast (apart from when I drove it). Heartily recommend.
