About the training
Basic Deckhand Pack training lasts for 5 days and includes the following:
Day 1 & Day 2: RYA Powerboat Level 2 (PB2)
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is a great start for those looking to work at sea. The course gives sufficient knowledge and confidence to drive a tender (up to 10 meters) and be extra help when there is a need for short trips from an anchored yacht. The RYA Powerboat license is highly valued in the Mediterranean where it is forbidden to operate a motor vessel without proper certification.
Day 3: RYA PWC/Jet Ski license (PWC)
PWC/Jet Ski license is another valuable qualification that allows deckhands to operate personal watercraft usually found on larger yachts. In the Med, it is strictly forbidden to operate jet ski without a proper license. On top, the PWC license can become the first step towards RYA PWC / Jet Ski Instructor qualifications which would add value to a deckhand's CV.
Day 4 & Day 5: Yacht Deckhand Training (YDH)
A comprehensive course covering various aspects of a deckhand's role - from etiquette on a vessel to boat maintenance. Throughout two days, future deckhands learn about maritine conventions and codes, code of conduct, daywork and crew agencies, cruising areas and different yachts, living in limited space, managing conflicts, as well as about the direct duties of a junior deckhand - cleaning, polishing, rust removal, splicing and ropework etc.
Why take this pack?
All our packs are designed to help save the money on training and get additional yachting skills and qualifications which could reinforce a new yachtie's CV. Basic Deckhand pack equips candidates with not only practical abilities of driving a tender and personal watercraft, and mainting the exterior of a yacht, but also instilles confidence to step on a yacht and perform the duties of a deckhand. As a superyacht crew training school, we recommend Basic Deckhand pack to all candidates who already hold STCW Basic Safety certificates but do not have enough knowledge and experience to work as a yacht deckhand.
