RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Shorebased Theory (Classroom)
The RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore qualification requires extensive theoretical knowledge in navigation including collision regulations, meteorology, passage planning etc. Our classroom-based course offers an intensive 6-day training and exam program and is designed for candidates who seek to obtain Coastal Skipper/ Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence (CoC) and require the Shorebased Course certificate of completion.
RYA Shorebased Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore course is a requirement for MCA Officer of the Watch (OOW), Chief Mate, and Master Certificate of Competency. The theory course certificate of completion is also required to apply for commercial endorsement.
This course is a part of RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Package (Motor) (theory + practical). Shorebased (theory) course is suitable for both sail and motor Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore qualifications.

About the course
The classroom-based RYA Shorebased Yachtmaster theory builds upon knowledge gained from RYA Day Skipper training. It's an in-depth advanced training that covers such aspects of navigation as:
- meteorology and interpretation of forecasts
- tidal streams
- fixing positions
- navigation in restricted visibility
- offshore navigation
- collision regulations
- pilotage
- use of almanacs and admiralty publications etc.
The course is recommended for experienced yachtsmen who wish to consolidate their navigational skills.
Assessment
The RYA Shorebased Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore course includes an exam that consists of 3 parts:
- Chartwork
- IRPCS
- Passage Making
The exam is spread over 2 days and is usually conducted on the 4th and 6th day of the course. Course instructor marks the exam papers straight away, thus the shorebased course certificate is issued immediately upon successful completion of the course.
Preparation
RYA Shorebased Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore theory course covers advanced knowledge in navigation, and therefore requires some preparation. We strongly recommend that your theoretical knowledge should be at the level of Day Skipper.
If you believe you have enough knowledge to sit on the course, but still would like to brush up on basics and terminology, we recommend that you complete Essential Navigation and Seamanship course. This course includes access to online lessons and a study pack (a chart, a plotter, dividers, and study books).
