About the course

STCW Basic Safety Training is a 5-day long course comprised of five modules:

  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.4): understanding of on-board working conditions, safety procedures and accident prevention.
  • Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.1): survival at sea in the event of an emergency, life-raft familiarisation.
  • Elementary First Aid (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.3): basic first aid training & resuscitation.
  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.2): fire causes, prevention, extinguishing techniques.
  • Proficiency in Security Awareness (STCW Reg. VI/6. Sect. A-VI/6 (para 4):  importance of on-board security and how to recognise and react in the event of security threats.

The course provides students with an important introduction to working at sea and will equip them with necessary skills and knowledge to work safely on-board a seagoing vessel. Although it is a legal requirement for working on board commercial vessels over 24-metres, it is strongly recommended to be taken by all seafarers. Once students obtain STCW Basic Safety Training they are equipped with the minimum mandatory requirement for working on superyachts and commercial vessels over 24 metres in length.

It is important to remember that in accordance with the 2010 Manila Amendments the holders of STCW Basic Safety certificates are obliged to update their proficiency in fire prevention and fire fighting and personal survival techniques every 5 years. This training is known as STCW Refresher course. You can learn more about STCW Basic Safety and Refresher course here: STCW Basic Safety or Refresher Course: Check Your Certificates

The STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping) courses are run in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code including the Manila amendments introduced in 2010.

FAQ

1. My English is very basic. Can I still sit on the course?

All our training courses are in English, and we recommend that you have a sufficient level of spoken and written language to sit on the course. The minimum required level is B1. If you fail on the course due to the language problem, we will not be able to reimburse your course fee.

2. Should I complete my ENG1 before the course?

Medical certificate is not required to sit on the course. It is required by the employer to confirm that you are physically fit to work at sea. You can complete your ENG1 exam any time before or after the course.

3. If I am not able to attend one of the days, what should I do?

If you are not able to join on the course for a strong reason and your absence can be justified (e.g. there is a medical report), we will reschedule you on the next course available without any extra fees. Absence without any justification will result in the failure in certain modules of the course scheduled on the day of your absence.

4. Is there an exam at the end of the course?

The assessment for the STCW Basic Safety is continuous. There is a short multipl-choice test after each module and a set of practicle excercises to complete. 100% attendance is required to complete the course and receive training certificates.

Very professional and fun Basic Safety Training

I attended the Basic Safety Training with Seascope in October 2024 and was pleased to find a very professional team and company. It was easy to book, the office was responsive and helpful in all the questions I had beforehand. The course was well structured and the instructors Ged and Alfie did a great job. I learned a lot and on top of all had a lot of fun! The best part was that we got to practice fire fighting and survival techniques with all the actual material and equipment. Thank you Seascope for this professional and encouraging training!
