Junior Yacht Engineer Pack (STCW Basic Safety & AEC1)
STCW Basic Safety training and Approved Engine Course (AEC1) are the two essential training courses you will need to complete if you are aiming at an engineering position onboard a yacht. STCW certificates (Elementary First Aid, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques, Personal Safety and Social Responisbility) are the minimum requirement to enter the yachting industry and work on commercial boats, and AEC1 gives the basic knowledge and skills to perform the duties of an Assistant Engineer. AEC1 is also beneficial for all deckhands who aim to expand their opportunities in yachting.

About the courses
- STCW Basic Safety training
STCW Basic Safety Training is a mandatory course for all maritime crew members, required under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW). It covers essential safety skills for working on board ships, including fire safety, sea survival, first aid, and personal safety and social responsibilities.
The course includes four key and one highly recommended modules:
Personal Survival Techniques (PST): Skills for surviving at sea in emergency situations.
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF): Basic knowledge and skills in preventing and fighting fires onboard.
Elementary First Aid: Basic medical emergency response and first aid techniques.
Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR): Safety awareness, environmental protection, and social responsibility while on board.
Security Awareness (PSA): mandatory certification for new and existing crew unless they already hold Ship Security Officer certificate.
- Approved Engine Course 1
The Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC 1) offers essential theoretical and practical knowledge of diesel engines and systems. Tailored to meet the MCA Codes of Practice for large commercial sailing and motor vessels, small commercial motor vessels, and small workboats, this course focuses on the engineering skills needed for safe vessel operation. It prepares students to carry out routine servicing and identify potential issues before they become major problems.
Assessment
Both courses include continuous assessment. There are multiple choice tests for each module of the STCW Basic Safety and a written assignment for AEC1. 100% attendance is obligatory in order to pass and receive certification.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the training and assignments trainees are awarded MCA approved certificates.
